Violet Indiana es el resultado de la unión musical del mítico guitarrista y productor Robin Guthrie y de la vocalista Siobhan de Mare. El grupo se forma a finales del 2000 cuando Guthrie - miembro fundador de Cocteau Twins y uno de los máximos responsables del prestigioso sello inglés Bella Union- decide iniciar un nuevo proyecto y elige como contrapunto perfecto a sus composiciones la calidez y personalidad de la voz de Siobhan, a la que conocía por su excelente trabajo al frente de los ya desaparecidos Möno. Dos talentos indiscutibles cuya suma ha dado como resultado una de las formaciones más interesantes de los últimos años. Tras un excelente ep de presentación, 'Choke' (Bella Union, 2000) y un aclamado álbum de debut, "Roulette" (Bella Union, 2001), Violet Indiana presentan su segundo álbum, "Russian Doll" (Bella Union/ Sinnamon records, 04). Un álbum capaz de superar las exigentes expectativas despertadas tras su magnífico debut en el que consolidan un sonido propio y con el que nos entregan una nueva colección de perfectas melodías pop. "Russian Doll" se abre suavemente con la delicada 'Never enough', un tema en el que la hipnótica voz de Siobhan es una vez más la gran protagonista. Y tras la luz, la oscuridad de la mano de 'Quelque Jour', un corte inspirado en algunas de las escenas de Blue Velvet de David Lynch, tan bello e inquietante como la propia película. Dos temas iniciales que resumen en cierta forma la esencia de un disco que oscila entre luces y sombras, entre el optimismo y la tristeza, dos sentimientos extremos siempre matizados por la atmósfera ensoñadora de sus composiciones. Un gran disco de un gran grupo. No pierdas la oportunidad de disfrutarlo en directo. Robin cuenta con un gran bagaje musical, en los ochenta lideró, junto a Simon Raymonde, la banda de culto Cocteau Twins, y en su larga trayectoria musical ha colaborado con artistas de la talla de Gun Club, Edwyn Collins e Ian Mc Culloch. Siobhan De Maré, tampoco es una recién llegada, formó parte de la banda Mono que cosechó un gran éxito en Estados Unidos con su álbum "Formica Blues". La unión de estas dos personalidades del pop ha dado como fruto "Roulette" (Bella Union 2001). Un disco que evoca paisajes musicales etéreos, bellas texturas de sintetizador y melodías desoladoras. "Roulette" susurra nuevos terrenos musicales pero con un toque familiar y conocido, donde se deja notar la admiración de Violet Indiana por un clásico de este sonido Angelo Badalamenti.

"IAN BROWN" (ENTREVISTA DE EMOL) Como líder y voz de Stone Roses, Ian Brown siguió la huella de los elegidos: una vida breve -apenas dos discos en cinco años- pero con una marca a fuego en el pop de los últimos 20 años. Si los ‘80 fueron patrimonio de The Smiths y The Cure, los ‘90 les pertenecieron a los Stone Roses. Ellos elaboraron la receta que mezcló guitarras, electrónica y melodías espaciales y que definió el desgano generacional masificado por los hermanos Gallagher, de Oasis. Su debut homónimo de 1989 fue elegido por The Guardian como el mejor álbum de la historia -por sobre la música de los Beatles- y no hay conteo que no los ubique en los lugares de avanzada. Los rastros de su herencia se pueden detectar a lo largo de todos los ‘90 y el nuevo siglo, desde Blur hasta Kasabian, desde Los Tres hasta Babasónicos. “Con los años se ha vuelto curioso ese fanatismo. No sé por qué dicen que soy el padre del brit pop”, dice Ian Brown, al otro lado del teléfono, casi con molestia, como si su mundo siguiera encapsulado en su Manchester natal y con la arrogancia que patentó como marca de fábrica. La fiesta interminable -¿En qué expresión ve hoy el legado del sonido de Manchester? “Mmmm (piensa)....la verdad, no soy un gran seguidor de la música de guitarras. Hasta hace un tiempo lo hacía, pero creo que hoy no. No me interesan ya las bandas con guitarras, que suenan a nostalgia, con melodías de los ‘60... creo que eso ya no va conmigo. Hoy mi música favorita es la música de Jamaica, el sonido negro, el hip-hop. Es lo que me interesa y ahí creo que está lo más honesto”. -Es curioso que piense eso quien precisamente hizo retornar el sonido de guitarras de los ‘60 a la década de los ‘90. “Puede ser. Hay grupos interesantes hoy y también los hubo hace diez años. Bandas grandiosas. Pero en lo personal no es algo que me mantenga ocupado”. -¿Qué recuerdos tienes de haber crecido en una ciudad como Manchester? “Los buenos recuerdos siempre son mejores que los malos. En realidad, de Manchester, de mis inicios en la música y de Stone Roses sólo tengo buenos recuerdos. Fueron días fantásticos, estuvimos cinco años desempleados antes de hacer el primer disco. Dos años después, todo cambió y estabas en lugares tan lejanos como Japón y todos coreaban tus camciones. En realidad, fueron días excitantes”. -Entonces, ¿por qué la banda tuvo una vida tan breve y terminó separándose con sólo dos discos? “Creo que la industria nos mató a todos. Es lo peor que puede existir. Nos agotó la sobreexposición y que no tuviéramos la libertad para manejar nuestra carrera. Por ahora, no hay ninguna opción de que nos juntemos. Si lo hacemos, sería por el dinero, y ésa jamás fue nuestra idea”. -Cuando Stone Roses se disolvió, dijiste precisamente que estabas hastiado de la industria. ¿Hoy piensas lo mismo? “Claro que sí, sobre todo hoy que hay muchas formas y caminos independientes para potenciar y mostrar música. Por eso gente como yo, británica y europea, puede disfrutar de música como la africana y abrir un poco su mundo”. -¿No te has visto con ninguno de tus compañeros el último tiempo? “Sólo veo a Mani (actual bajista de Primal Scream). Nos telefoneamos, conversamos y nos hemos juntado un par de veces. Somos muy amigos. Con John Squire (guitarrista y una de las partes creativas del conjunto) jamás me volví a ver. Desde el preciso momento en que se acabó Stone Roses, nunca más hablamos”. Días en solitario -En solitario has lanzado cinco discos. Casi todos son más variados y tienen más electrónica de lo que mostraste en Stone Roses. ¿Puede ser esa la principal diferencia? “Creo que definitivamente los míos son más originales. Stone Roses tuvo su raíz en los ‘60. Nuestro segundo disco tuvo mucho de la música de los ‘70. Responden totalmente a la lógica musical que se daba hace unos 20 años. En cambio creo que los míos están más impregnados de matices, estilos, música diversa. Tienen otro estilo”. -¿Qué planes tienes para 2007? ¿Opción de un nuevo álbum? “Si estoy escribiendo mi próximo disco, que espero salga en febrero. Siempre estoy trabajando en muchas cosas. En noviembre, antes de pasar por Chile y Argentina, estaré en Hong Kong grabando el disco. Volveré a fin de año para darle los retoques finales. Como muestra de su noviazgo durante años con una mexicana y de su conocimiento de otras culturas, Brown se despide en perfecto español: “Muchas gracias por todo. Hasta luego y nos vemos en el show”. "JENNIFER CHARLES" Jennifer Charles nació en Washington un 15 de Noviembre. La astrología no es mi fuerte, pero escuchándola cantar y luego de haber apreciado su performance escénica, deduzco que es del signo de… admiración. Junto a su esposo, el guitarrista y cantante Oren Bloedow , lidera una de las bandas más inquietantes surgidas durante la ultima década en el campo de la música pop (esto expresado en su acepción más ilustrada): Elysian Fields. Ambos también comparten un proyecto grupal alternativo denominado La Mar Enfortuna, orientado a la música sefardí y con el cual se encuentran grabando en estos días su segundo disco. Jennifer Charles es algo más que una cara bonita. En escena, además de cantar fenómeno, seduce, embriaga, hipnotiza y otras sensaciones que por prudencia omitiremos en esta ocasión. Sin embargo, fuera del escenario, deja el personaje y se muestra tal cual es: cálida, suave, inteligente y sensible. Y eso también… seduce, embriaga, hipnotiza, y… etc., etc., etc. Escribe poesía, hace yoga, pinta, cocina , juega al ajedrez... como dijimos alguna vez: sólo falta que abra la puerta para ir a jugar… La música fue una constante en su vida. Su madre fue cantante de jazz y su padre condujo un programa de jazz en la radio. Charles estudió teatro pero sin alejarse demasiado de la música. Actuó en grupos experimentales como The Studio y The Source. Hizo la secundaria en la Duke Ellington School of Arts. Más tarde completaría su bachillerato en arte dramático en la New York University. En esa etapa actuó en la escena off-Broadway y participó también de una banda llamada Prayer Box. Desde temprana edad desarrolló aptitudes artísticas leyendo su poesía en lugares como la iglesia de St. Marks, Dixon Place o X Funeral Home; hizo diferentes shows cantando jazz, participó de las jornadas de apoyo al Knitting Factory, tocó con Negativland, trabajó para las personas sin hogar, fue modelo artística y participó del proyecto Voces de la Calle con narración de Martin Sheen. Junto a su pareja Oren Bloedow, en 1995 fundó Elysian Fields. Juntos también han participado de otro proyecto grupal, La Mar Enfortuna y colaboraron con John Zorn en un disco tributo a la música de Serge Gainsbourg (allí Charles interpretó Les Amours Perdeus, tema que pertenece a la película Emporte Moi de Lea Pools) Charles también ha grabado con Dan the Automator’s, Lovage, Firewater, en varios discos de John Zorn y Foetus, con el compositor francés Jean-Louis Murat y participó como invitada en el proyecto solista del ex-baterista de Nine Inch Nails, Chirs Vrenna. Interpretó algunas canciones para un proyecto sobre poemas de Edgar Allan Poe, compuso en colaboración con Jonny Klimek y Reinhold Heil la música para el film Myriad. Pero la mayor parte de su trayectoria ha sido ocupada por Elysian Fields. Su primer disco con la banda fue el EP titulado Elysian Fields. Más tarde llegaría el aclamado Bleed Your Cedar. En el 2000 editaron Queen Of the Meadow y en el 2002 hicieron el exquisito Dreams That Breath Your Name. "ELIZABETH FRASER" Cocteau Twins es una banda de rock, originaria de Grangemouth, Escocia, que estuvo en activo durante las dos últimas décadas del siglo XX (1982-1996). Derivada de la música punk y New Wave, se inscriben dentro de la llamada Dark Wave. Su sonido único (causado en parte por las innovadoras texturas del guitarrista Robin Guthrie y la voz y la técnica única sin apenas precedentes de Elizabeth Fraser) hizo que fueran una de las bandas más originales de su época.

Con tan sólo 16 años, editó su single de debut “This is a Black Man’s Country” para el productor Phil Pratt; canción que no alcanzó gran popularidad y que obligó al joven adolescente a pasar sus siguientes años a la sombra del estrellato. En enero de 1970, Horace Hinds se presenta a varias audiociones organizadas por Coxsone Dodd en su famoso Studio One. El famoso productor no tardó en interesarse por el artista, gracias en parte a su balada “Got to be sure”, canción que cautivó al instante a Dodd. Coxsone editó el single bajo el nombre artístico de Horace Andy, intentando evitar así que la audiencia le relacionase con su primo Justin Hinds, que tenia su mismo timbre de voz y creía poder perjudicar a la joven promesa. Tomó su nombre rindiendo tributo al legendario Bob Andy, del grupo de rock steady The Paragons. A “Got to be sure” le siguieron un buen número de singles durante 1971, incluyendo “See a man’s face” y “Night Owl”, mientras que los éxitos “Fever” y “Mr.Bassie” llegaron un año más tarde. En ese momento, con un Horace Andy en pleno ascenso, sale al mercado “Skylarking”, single que le catapulta directamente al número uno de todos los charts jamaicanos. A partir de entonces, Andy se convirte en una verdadera máquina de producir canciones de éxito: “Love of a woman”, “Every tongue shall tell”, “Where do the children play”, “Oh lord why lord”, “Money is the root of all evil”, “Get wise”, "Love You to Want Me", "Girl I Love You", "Jah Jah Children", "Lonely Woman", "God Is Displeased", “Children of Israel”, “Beware of a smiling face”… A través de su extensa carrera, Andy reeditó varias veces canciones de su primera época, algo muy corriente en la mayoria de artistas jamaicanos, aunque con la diferencia de que las nuevas versiones desbancaban siempre a las originales, siendo uno de los pocos artistas que siempre ofrecía algo nuevo en sus reediciones. En 1977, Andy emigra a Connecticut, donde edita el clásico LP “In The Light” y su remezcla “In The Light Dub”. Su fama fuera de Jamaica le abre entonces numerosas puertas que le llevan a grabar multitud de singles y álbums para diferentes sellos y productores: “Pure ranking”, “Black Cinderella”, “Natty Dread a weh she want”, “Dancehall Style”, “Spying Glass”… Pronto empieza a trabajar a caballo entre New York, Kingston y Londres. Es en esta última ciudad donde recibe una extraña petición de una desconocida formación de Bristol que le invitaba a colaborar en su primer LP. “One Love” se convierte entonces en un éxito mundial, y el primer disco de Massive Atack, Blue Lines, en un nuevo referente de la música electrónica. A partir de ese momento Andy será invitado a colaborar en todos los álbumes del grupo incluso adaptando algunas de sus primeras canciones, hecho que le otorga el privilegio de abrirse a una audiencia hasta ahora desconocida. Su gran popularidad le lleva también a colaborar con productores y músicos de primera linea, como el siempre genial Mad Professor que en 1997 le produce el disco “Roots and Branches”; o el grupo británico de trip hop Dub Pistols, con el que colabora en el álbum “Six millions ways to live” en el año 2001. A su vez, el nuevo sello Melankolik, creado por los mismos componentes de Massive Attack, se estrena con “Skylarking”, una recopilación del artista jamaicano que incluye algunas rarezas hasta ahora desconocidas. Actualmente, Horace Andy sigue colaborando en diversos proyectos de distinto género musical, así como actuando en giras mundiales tanto en solitario como con Massive Attack.

¡YA VIENE! ¡YA VIENE! Geoff Barrow, uno de los integrantes fundadores de Portishead, aseguró que el grupo ya tiene gran parte del material que formará parte de su tercer disco de estudio y que pese a que “están en un desorden perfecto, por primera vez en años, suenan como un álbum y no como Zero 7 o esa mierda chill out de Moby”, según cita el sitio de noticias Zona musical. La banda de trip hop (esa mezcla entre jazz, electrónica y hip-hop) se reunió con su sello discográfico para hablar de los planes futuros, lo que Barrow reconoció como un encuentro positivo para ambas partes. Recordemos que la tardía salida del disco, según especulaciones del medio, se debe a los problemas que tuvieron los de Bristol con su sello Go! Beat, tras su fusión con Island. “Alien”, que parecería ser el nombre de esta tercera entrega, continuará la carrera discográfica iniciada por Barrow y su notable vocalista Beth Gibbons en 1994 con “Dummy”, un álbum que incluyó importantes éxitos como “Sour Times”, “Numb” y “Glory Box” y en el que participaron los músicos Adrian Utley y Dave Mc Donald que serían incorporados al grupo para sus siguientes trabajos. En 1997, Portishead editó un disco homónimo que incluyó canciones como “All Mine”, “Mourning Air”, “Over”, “Only You” y “Elysium”. Un año después, lanzó un material grabado en vivo en Nueva York junto a una orquesta de cámara y que fue editado en DVD con la inclusión de videos y cortos -“To Kill a Dead Man”, “Road Trip” y “Wandering Star”- con la idea original, actuación y banda sonora de los integrantes del grupo. Desde entonces, los de Bristol han realizado proyectos por separado, particularmente Gibbons que el año 2002 editó un disco junto a Rustin Man, participó de la banda sonora de la película francesa “L’Annulaire”, compuso un tema para el segundo disco de la cantante Joss Stone y colaboró con la ex modelo y cantante Jane Birkin, con Rodrigo Leao para su disco “Cinema” y con David Steele de Fine Young Cannibals. Actualmente concentrados en los últimos detalles de la que sería su tercera placa de estudio, algunos medios han filtrado los posibles títulos que incluiría el disco y que serían “Open Box”, “Love of Life”, “Broquette”, “Broken Wall”, “Beatless Day”, “Of Liberty of All and None”, “Alien”, “Signature”, “Minor Pain”, “Traveling Fast to There” y “Tomorrow’s Death”.

ESPECIAL DE TRP HOP URUGUAYO. RENDHER Luego de seis años de carrera con Elefante - una de las bandas de rock más importantes en Uruguay, con 3 discos editados, Elefante 1 (1999), Bazar (2001) y Forma (2002) - Stella Maris Maneco y Harry, dan comienzo a este nuevo proyecto en agosto de 2003. El grupo comienza a componer y grabar en el piso 10 de un apartamento céntrico, completando así una maqueta de aproximadamente 17 temas. La nueva propuesta fluye entre el rock y el más sofisticado pop electrónico, mientras las letras siguen sin dejar a un lado los sentimientos con mensajes simples. Con la intención de salir a tocar, en abril de 2004 se integra a la banda el baterista Federico Rebollo. De esta manera comienzan a presentarse en diferentes escenarios de Montevideo y el interior del país, llegando incluso a participar en la edición 2005 del festival Pilsen Rock, ante un público de más de cien mil personas. Hoy se encuentran ultimando los detalles de "Piso 10", su debut discográfico, a editarse próximamente por el sello Contrapedal. PORTAL 7 se forma en el 2002 como una banda que incursiona en las formas más extremas del llamado metal técnico. Al poco tiempo con el ingreso de Ayllú Almada como vocalista, el estilo se va refinando y nuevas tendencias musicales hacen acto de presencia en el sonido de la banda. A una semana de su debut, a fines de 2002, y gracias a su primer demo, viajan para presentarse en Buenos Aires, en el mítico Cemento. En el 2003 ganan el premio a Mejor Vocalista Femenina, además de ser nominados a Mejor Baterista, Mejor Bajista y Mejor Tecladista en un concurso realizado por un reconocido pub montevideano. Entre el 2004 y 2005 participan con temas de su segundo demo en distintos compilados, entre ellos los realizados por la revista Jedbanger (Argentina), Kakahuate (Uruguay) y el compilado de bandas uruguayas "Never Surrender Vol. 1". Además, graban con la participación de Maneco (músico de la banda de rock electrónico Rendher) una versión del tema "Ashes to Ashes", clásico de David Bowie, para un disco tributo del sello Licor de Mono Records (Argentina).
